Walpurgis - The Night of Devils and Witches

Be on the watch if you go into the valley of witches and devils during that time! You might be harassed by all kind of strange beings, for they are hidden everywhere: on squares, in silent corners and of course especially on the Hübichenstein Hill. There they dance carelessly knowing well that in that night, no human being can cause them any harm, until exactly midnight, when the Queen of May ends the witches’ lively activities and prepares Bad Grund for the spring season by dancing into the month of May.

The Walpurgis Night is an event which is popular far beyond the Harz mountain area, and tens of thousands participate - both locals and visitors! Many of them like to dress up like witches and devils themselves, putting on strange clothes and behaving accordingly. Others are simply enchanted by the unique atmosphere of this exciting event.

 

On April 30th around noon, the first witches appear in Bad Grund—very small witches, as the children’s Walpurgis opens this exciting event.

When the sun goes down, the witches become bigger and have even more fun. People enjoy themselves in the streets eating and drinking—with popular music and good conversation. 

 

They dance until sunrise...
